Elli Unveils New Wallbox Integrating PV System and Dynamic Tariffs
Volkswagen's subsidiary, Elli, is introducing a new wallbox for the European market called the Elli Charger 2. This device integrates with home photovoltaic systems for surplus energy charging and is designed to work with dynamic electricity tariffs. Customers now have the option to purchase a photovoltaic system from Otovo alongside the wallbox.
Launched under the ‘Smart Charging’ initiative announced by VW in June 2024, the Elli Charger 2 is now available in four models across 28 European countries. Giovanni Palazzo, CEO of Elli and Senior Vice President of Volkswagen Charging & Energy, stated, “At Elli, we consider smart charging as the bridge between electric mobility and the energy transition at home. Our innovative charging products, particularly the new wallbox, represent a significant advancement for our users.”
The wallbox is compatible with all electric vehicles equipped with a Type 2 charging connector. The base models, ‘Connect 11’ and ‘Connect 22,’ support charging at up to 11 or 22 kW, include WiFi and Ethernet connectivity, and come with cable lengths of 4.5 or 7.5 meters. Although these models feature an energy meter, it is neither a MID nor a legally compliant meter. The more advanced models, ‘Pro 22’ and ‘Pro 22 (legally compliant),’ come with LTE connectivity and either a MID or a legally compliant meter, the latter specifically designed for the German market. Pricing ranges from €759 to €1,499.
One key feature of the new wallbox is its ability to utilize surplus energy from photovoltaic systems for charging. Customers can potentially reduce their charging costs by up to 40% when using excess solar power. Additionally, for those on dynamic electricity tariffs, the Elli Charger 2 can automatically select the most economical charging times.
By ensuring that electric vehicles are charged when renewable energy is abundant and typically less expensive, the Elli Charger 2 enhances the environmental benefits of EV charging. This approach not only promotes efficient use of renewable energy but also lays the groundwork for future developments, enabling EVs to function as energy storage solutions that help stabilize the power grid, according to Palazzo.
Initially, Volkswagen is offering the photovoltaic system from Otovo in conjunction with the wallbox. This partnership will start as a pilot project in Germany at select Volkswagen dealerships in cities such as Hamburg, Ulm, and Augsburg, with plans for broader expansion across Europe in the future.
