EDP to Install 650 Fast-Charging Stations at Aldi Locations in Portugal
Aldi has partnered with Energias de Portugal (EDP) to set up over 650 fast-charging stations across its stores on the Portuguese mainland. These charging points will be installed at more than 140 current locations and new Aldi outlets opening in 2024 and 2025.
EDP has indicated that the chargers will deliver between 60 and 120 kW of power but has not specified how this will be distributed among the individual charging stations or whether they will support CHAdeMO and/or Type 2 connectors in addition to CCS.
The project encompasses both existing Aldi shops and the upcoming ones. Furthermore, EDP has also been tasked with managing the existing charging facilities at 34 locations.
These charging stations will be integrated into the public Mobi.E network, operated by a state-owned company. Users will activate the chargers with a Portuguese RFID card (CEME), though the announcement does not mention the availability of other payment options.
This addition of 650 charging points will significantly enhance EDP's existing network, which comprises over 3,300 chargers spread across more than 195 municipalities throughout the country. Since EDP began investing in electric mobility in Portugal, its publicly accessible charging stations have facilitated over two million charging sessions.
