What is CCS Charging?
The Combined Charging System (CCS) is one of the leading standards for DC fast charging, competing with other systems like CHAdeMO, Tesla's proprietary connectors (for the US/Japan and the rest of the world), and the Chinese GB/T standard.
CCS charging sockets integrate both AC and DC charging capabilities, using shared communication pins. This design allows the CCS-equipped vehicles to have a more compact charging socket compared to the space required for both a CHAdeMO or GB/T DC socket and a separate AC socket.
This configuration enables seamless communication between the vehicle and the electrical grid, treating the vehicle as a "smart appliance." However, it does create incompatibility with CHAdeMO and GB/T charging systems without specialized adapters, which are not readily accessible.
A notable recent development in the "DC Plug War" is Tesla's adoption of the CCS2 standard for DC charging in its European Model 3 rollout.
