WHAT IS AN RCD of Elctric Vehicle Charger?
An RCD or residual current device is a smart device that has become one of the most common electrical safety devices in the world. Simply put, its design purpose is to prevent electrical injury or death by quickly closing the live circuit when humans or animals come into contact with it.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
In a balanced circuit, the current flows from the power source through the load (such as an electric vehicle charger) and then back to the power source. The current in the live wire and neutral wire is equal, and the RCD remains closed.
If a person uses a faulty charging station or cable and comes into contact with a live conductor, current will begin to flow through their body to the ground. In this case, the current flowing between the charged conductor and the neutral conductor is no longer balanced, as some current has already reached the ground through another path. RCD quickly disconnects, thereby interrupting the circuit and protecting personnel.
IEC 61851 STANDARD REQUEST FOR EV CHARGER RCD?
International Standard IEC 61851-1 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 69:
Electric road vehicles and electric industrial trucks.
The lEC 61851 series of standards that gives the general requirements for the supply' of electric energy to Electric vehicles.
The IEC 61851-1 standard states:
Where the EV supply equipment (electric vehicle charger) is equipped with a socket-outlet or vehicle connector for AC use in accordance with lEC 62196 (all parts), protective measures against DC fault current shall be taken. The appropriate measures shall be:
* RCD type B or
* RCD Type A and appropriate equipment that ensures the disconnection of the supply in case of DC fault current above 6 mA.
